Kamala Markandaya [1924-2004]

Kamala Markandaya was born in Bangalore, India in 1924. She was a native of Mysore. While in college Kamala Markandaya wrote short stories for the weekly newspaper. When she was 24 years old she graduated from the University of Madras. She then moved to England, after India claimed their independence. After moving to England she married Bertrand Taylor, during their marriage they had one daughter. In 1955 she published her first novel, Nectar In A Sieve. She published eight more books in her life time. At her home in London, on May 16, 2004, Kamala Markandaya died of kidney failure. She was 80 years of age when she passed away. Kamala Markandaya started the first generation of Indian women authors.
